We provide a range of therapeutic and counseling services for children, adolescents and teens in the Carroll County, MD area. The first, most fluent language of children is play, so we are proud to offer play therapy, drawing from several different evidence-based models and customized to best fit with each child’s goals and personality.

We involve primary caregivers as much as possible. For children 5 and under, parents are often invited into the room for sessions, and private one-on-one parent meetings are held regularly. We also offer a parent consultation model for young children, where the focus of treatment is the parent’s relationship and strategies with their child.

For older children and teens, play therapy expands to include other playful, developmentally appropriate activities, conversations, and strategies. Our practice embraces digital media as an integral part of our young people’s lives, and welcomes it in our therapeutic work. This includes video games and social media! Our practice provides therapy for some of the most challenging issues facing our tweens and teens, including self-harm, social anxiety, and eating disorders.

Treatment is always specifically tailored to meet each child’s needs. Simply put, CCT is a place where young people struggling with life's challenges can confront problems, find their footing, create solutions, and grow stronger and more confident.

In addition we specialize in LBGTQ+ Gender Affirming Care, Gender-affirming care is medically-necessary, life-saving care. For transgender and nonbinary children and adolescents, early gender affirming care is crucial to overall health and well-being.

Issues We Treat

01

Anxiety

Anxiety often presents as avoidance--obvious fear or worry. However, unexplained irritability and anger can also have their root in anxiety, as can trouble sleeping, fatigue, headaches, or chronic stomachaches. Our approach is helping children to explore and face their worries through understanding and support.

03

Self-harm

A child or teen who is self-harming is one of the most frightening issues a parent can face. At CCT, our strategy is first to assess for safety and whether the self-harming client is at high risk of ending their life, or if the self-harm is an attempt at a coping strategy or a social decision. Once a baseline of safety is established, clients are gradually guided to finding their own motivation to stop and ultimately care for their body in a positive way.

05

AHDH & AUTISM

CCT loves neurodiversity! Clients with diagnosed or suspected ADHD, Autism, or other neurodiversity are welcomed at our practice. We work to support them (and their families) in understanding how their specially-wired brain works, and what it needs. This includes exploring how to have satisfying relationships, achieve their goals, and find confidence and value in themselves and their unique-ness.

parental
therapy

Many of us at CCT are parents. We know how incredibly hard parenting can be (hardest and biggest responsibility ever!). This is even more true when we are parenting children with significant struggles. We find it obvious that collaborating with parents in trying to understand their child’s behavior is essential, as is creating a place for parents to share how challenging it can be to parent their unique child. We can help you navigate being a parent, suggest various parenting perspectives and offer techniques that might make parenting your child a bit easier.

02

Depression

In recent years, depression in children and teens has become an epidemic. Social isolation and a shift towards screen-based relationships have created a landscape for children that many parents feel powerless to navigate. Feelings of loneliness, shame, and hopelessness can become overwhelming for children, especially in the aftermath of loss or social challenges. Our strategy is to bring children back into a place of connectedness, where they can get a toehold on hope and find a true sense of their own value.

04

Eating Disorders

Food and eating have a powerful effect on how we feel. Obsessive calorie counting, food rules, and eating restriction can quickly become a full-blown eating disorder, as can regular over-eating and binge-eating. We help children and teens to discover the underlying feelings and situations their eating issues are trying to address, and work together to bring food back to its role as fuel and nourishment. Referrals to higher levels of care and collaborating with other providers, like nutritionists, are incorporated, when needed.

06

Behavioral Issues

When your child is acting out, or not behaving as you’d like, it can be extremely challenging, embarrassing, infuriating and de-stabilizing to the family. When your child is yelling at you, getting in trouble at school, or hurting others, parents first question is “what do I do?” Our approach is 2-sided, helping parents to maintain reasonable limits and leadership at home and working with the child to unravel the anger, fear and/or shame that is likely driving their behavior.

08

outside the box

At CCT we recognize that not everyone fits in the box that many mental health practitioners subscribe to. We are open to working hard to understand even the most complex/unique journeys and partner with you to develop the right mental health plan for you.
